Writing Towards Freedom

It's time for this year's Tread on Trafficking campaign. I'm naming mine Writing Towards Freedom this year for two reasons. One, the personal goal I have taken on in conjunction with the fundraising this year is to write at least 10 minutes per day, 6 days per week. (A lot of a little goes a long long way... just like donations!)

Two, Writing Towards Freedom stands for WTF, which is exactly my response to the idea that people find it acceptable to prey on other humans, children in particular, through sex trafficking.

One friend wrote me an email asking why this is such an important issue for me. My response:

Why is it personal to me? I'm not sure. Maybe because the thought of it makes me so sick that I almost CAN'T think about it much. When my friend first blogged about the organization I went to their website and then actually started crying as I
read it, in a way that I'd never had with any other organization. The way Love146 described choosing their name (after a little girl they saw that they couldn't rescue and who was labeled with a number). There was an article on their site too about how when they got started, the advice they were given was not to give up, that American causes get very excited and then peter out.

I think the thoughts and emotions that come up for me most often with this cause is, "There are so many groups I'd like to support, against disease, poverty and environmental catastrophe, which are all natural by-products of our world. Why the f*** do I have to use up my time and effort stopping people who are just doing pure evil." The fury I feel towards the way people can do this to children makes me want to scream and it makes me want to act.

One more thought is simply that the Tread On Trafficking campaign is fine and manageable. I love having the freedom to choose a personal goal other than fundraising in which to channel my energies and to celebrate!

That answer your question? :)
