Moms Rising
Very excited about this Moms Rising Organization my dad just directed me to. I never realized before having ND just how non-child friendly our system really is. I totally want to do stuff about it.

Huh. I was always told that employers absolutely could NOT legally ask me questions about my marital status, family, etc., etc. There was a case a few years ago where a woman was denied employment because she had children, which the employer felt would interfere with the work situation (I think it was assembly work and he used the argument that kids get sick or have school days off, etc.) she sued and I'm pretty sure she won.
So I'm not sure what the petition is all about. Of course, I didn't go and read it thoroughly, either ;)

You've got a point. I think it is meant to be illegal, but apparently it happens anyway. Not sure what the petition is for, but I'm glad to see an organization working on so many different aspects of working motherhood. Flexible time, maternity leave etc. just aren't looked upon favorably as they should be in our country.
As for asking if you are a mom. I was in a screening interview with a school district in which they asked if I wanted to have kids. I had been prewarned that that was illegal, but I was a brand new young teacher in competition for few teaching jobs. What was I supposed to do? Another of my grad school colleagues had a similar experience and we reported it to our grad school teacher. Not sure if anything happened past that.
